Using the legislature environment as a catalyst, the program "School at the Legislature" helps students in Grade 6 learn about the provincial government in Alberta. For a week, students will be studying various subjects - social studies, obviously, but also science during a guided tour of the gardens of the Legislature; Health and life skills by doing interviews with professionals working for the Legislative Assembly; and French while writing in their journals to reflect on their week. Program coordinators work with teachers to develop a unique schedule for each school. Teachers can customize the activities of the week to address particular aspects of the school curriculum. During the week the class will be on the Legislative Assembly grounds, a coordinator will guide the activities. The level of teacher involvement is up to you.
Parents and other supervisors are welcome, and are appreciated with classes of over 30 students.
From September to June
A Grade 6 class (maximum of 40 students)
One week
The fee for the program is $700 per class. After completing the program, School at the Legislature reimburses travel costs incurred to travel to the Legislative Assembly grounds. Espenses for meals, accomodation and additional transport costs are the responsibility of the school. Price subject to change.
Available for all schools in Alberta, the program “School at the Legislature” offers Grade 6 teachers the possibility of moving their class on the Legislative Assembly grounds, and for a week. Students thus have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in class to real situations. It is also easy and fun to study the functioning of the government through direct observation.
Several activities, interviews and presentations are available in French. Teachers choose the activities and presentations that will be offered to students during the week.
