These resources will help you better understand the difference, in terms of language proficiency, between the three groups of learners (Francophone, French Immersion, FSL). To better understand Francophone Education

In this video, Chantal Viens talks about Francophone education in Alberta and gives her suggestions to the service providers interested to provide services to the students enrolled in Francophone education. Chantal shares her knowledge based on a rich teaching experience in Francophone schools and in the training she offers teachers as well as her doctoral studies in this area. 



To better understand French as a Second Language courses

In this video, Michelle De Abreu talks about the French as a Second Language courses (FSL) in Alberta and gives her suggestions to service providers interested to offer programs or courses to students in those courses. Michelle shares her knowledge based on a rich experience as a FSL teacher as well as a FSL program consultant in Alberta.



To better understand French Immersion

In this video, Alyre Morin, assistant principal in a French Immersion school, talks avout the French Immersion program in Alberta and gives his suggestions to service providers interested to offer services to the students in this program. Alyre shares his knowledge based on a rich experience with French Immersion as a teacher, a school administrator and a university professor.



1. What is the goal of Francophone Education in Alberta?

This program has been designed to help students identify with and be part of the Francophone culture and community.

2. What is the description of Francophone Education?

As an extension of family and community life, the school environment, programming, and extra-curricular activities provide the student with a solid and dynamic basis for sustaining use of the French language and participation in Francophone culture.

French first language schools begin in Kindergarten or Grade 1; however, eligible students may enter at any grade level.

If the student entering the Francophone school speaks little or no French, the Francisation program will be used to help him/her learn French and participate in activities taking place in French.

3. Who are the students that are enrolled in Francophone Education?

The Francophone education Is intended for a child:
- whose parent learned French as their first language and still understands it;
- whose parent received primary-school instruction in French in Canada;
- whose brother or sister has received or is receiving primary- or secondary-school instruction in French in Canada (as described in section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms);
- whose parent with Francophone roots wants to introduce their child to the French language and Francophone identity and culture;
- whose parent wants their child to retain their French-language skills and Francophone identity and culture (e.g., a Francophone immigrant who is a permanent resident of Canada).

6. What is Francisation?

Francisation programming provides instruction and support for elifible children and students registered in a Francophone education program to acquire language proficiency in French that enables them to fully integrate socially, academically and culturally at the community level, as a Francophone and in Canadian society in general.

1. What is the goal of the French as a Second Language courses in Alberta?

Students will develop a good foundation in French and an appreciation of the French language and francophone culture.

2. What is the description of the FSL courses?

Taking French as a Second Language courses (often referred to as FSL) is optional in Alberta. Students may begin learning French in either Grade 4 or Grade 10. Two options are possible: the 9-year program from Grade 4 to Grade 12, and the 3-year program from Grade 10 to Grade 12.

The learning of French is optional and school authorities decide which courses are offered. In some school districts, a local policy is in place which requires all students in the district to learn a second language, with one of those language offerings being French.

French is taught as a school subject.

French is used as the language of classroom communication.

The students’ French abilities are developed through the use of themes and projects geared to students' interests and life experience.

3. Who are the students that take the FSL courses?

French as a second language (FSL) courses are intended for students whose first language is not French.

4. What amount of French is taught in the FSL courses?

In this program, French is taught as a subject. Alberta Education recommends from 30 to 40 minutes a day in elementary and junior high school and 125 hours for each course in senior high school.

6. What types of schools offer the French immersion program?

There are a variety of school contexts in which immersion programs are offered, including immersion centers and dual or multiple-track schools. For more information, please refer to the document below.

1. What is the goal of the French Immersion program in Alberta?

French Immersion programs are intended for students whose first language is not French. Students will be functionally fluent in French and develop an appreciation of the French language and francophone culture. This program prepares students to pursue postsecondary education in French.

2. What is the description of the French Immersion program?

French Immersion programming begins with an intensive period of French language development.Students build a foundation in French so that they can learn to read and begin their studies in other subjects, such as math, science, social studies, the fine arts, etc. School and extracurricular activities in French may be used to support the development of language skills and cultural appreciation.

Students are usually introduced to early immersion in Kindergarten or Grade 1. Late immersion is typically introduced at the Grade 7 level.
