Description

The Cave and Basin National Historic Site of Canada commemorates the birthplace of Canada's National Parks, which began here in 1885. Our interactive displays and exhibits take you on a journey through the years to show you how our national parks have grown. Naturally occurring, warm mineral springs can be found inside the cave, and outside in an emerald coloured basin. The site also has two self guided boardwalk trails with bilingual signs.
Wheelchair accessible, washrooms and various picnic spots are available.

PROGRAMS

Discovery Tour:
Students learn about the site's importance to First Nations and how it was (re)-discovered by early CPR railway workers in 1883 who saw its tourism potential.
They are provided with a strong knowledge base about Parks Canada and its notion to conserve and protect our natural lands.
Perfect for all ages.
Touches upon important topics such as Indigenous peoples, the CPR, conservation of our lands.

Basin of Secrets:
Students meet bacteria and learn how these micro-organisms support the endangered Banff Springs Snail. Educates on their importance and how they can protect the small and vulnerable snail.
